On the 14th of November West Yorkshire Trading Standards Service joined forces with The Neighbourhood Policing Team, Council Wardens, Incommunities, Scholemoor Beacon and Councillor Joanne Dodds to launch the cold calling control zone in the following streets: Necropolis Road, Turner Avenue, Wyvern Close, Birks Avenue & Dixon Avenue.
What this means for the residents that live within this zone is that no sales people, traders or charity collectors can knock on their door without an appointment. The aim of these schemes is to prevent incidents of doorstep crime, discourage rogue traders and nuisance callers and reduce the fear of crime. Essentially, the zones aim to give local residents the confidence to say ‘NO’ to uninvited sales people and to warn cold callers that they are not welcome.
Councillor Joanne Dodds who has been at the forefront of setting up the zone said ‘I find it upsetting when I read about vulnerable people who have been victims of doorstep crime. These criminals target particular properties, areas and residents. We want to give these residents the confidence to say no to unwanted callers. The cold calling zones can do this and we hope that they will all take this opportunity to make the scheme work by telling cold callers they are not welcome’.
This is the second cold calling control zone within the Big Local area, earlier this year St Wilfrids Crescent, Close, Green & Church Court was set up and is working very well.
